John X Meriman, Rustenberg Estate, Stellenbosch
Lavishly produced, French-oaked style with rich flavours of cassis, plums, vanilla and spice. A roast wine.
Founded in 1682, this historic estate has been owned by the Barlow family since 1941. Experimentative winemaker Adi Badenhorst has been the catalyst for innovations such as aerial x-raying of vines to assess grape ripeness. Lavish production values for this Merlot-Cabernet blend (named after an eminent ex-Rustenberg owner) - hand harvesting, ageing in French oak -have resulted in a silky-textured style with rich flavours of cassis, plums, vanilla and spice. Roast beef wine.
