El Transistor, Rueda Blanco, Telmo Rodriguez, Spain
Arrestingly good. Bright citrus flavours develop impressive complexity and length of flavour.
Relentlessly innovative Spanish winemaker Telmo Rodriguez has struck again and this time he has set out to prove to the world that the Verdejo grape from Rueda can produce world class wine. He picked the vineyard site of 'El Monte' near the village of Seca for its loose gravel and limestone soil in which ancient bush vines of the Verdejo grape were growing. Nurtured by sustainable agriculture the grapes are hand harvested and fermented, in a bewildering variety of casks of different sizes and concrete tanks, using wild yeasts and then the wine is matured for 9 months before bottling. El Transistor derives its peculiar name from Telmo's solution to keeping wild boar out of the vineyard. He left a radio playing and the ravening beasts went and ate someone else's grapes! Olly Smith, Mail online: "This white wine is awesome. The grape is 100% Verdejo sourced from old bush vines, and the wine got its name thanks to a radio placed strategically in the vineyard to ward off local wild boar f
