Wines and wine regions of Chile

Image of red grapes being tipped into trailer in ChileChile is home to great value, quality, varietal-dominant wines. It enjoys an exceptional, almost Mediterranean climate, with the majority of its rainfall in the winter, whilst the cloud-free summers enable perfect growing and ripening conditions. Summer droughts dictate the use of drip irrigation for the vines' survival, but the big daytime /night-time variation in temperature allows the grapes to ripen slowly, retaining their freshness and purity of fruit flavours. The Andes and the Pacific have a major influence on the myriad of micro-climates to be found in Chile, and some of the highest quality vineyards are to be found in the mountain foothills. Around 70% of Chile's total production is red wine, but overlook their appetising whites at your peril!

Maipo

Just south of Santiago, the Maipo Valley is the oldest and most prestigious of Chile's winegrowing regions. Irrigation water comes from the River Maipo, which is naturally high in lime, and is said to give the wines their distinctive characteristics. The Maipo Valley enjoys a Mediterranean climate with low rainfall, hot summers and frost-free winters. The rocky, alluvial vineyards are planted up to 650 meters above sea level, allowing for a long and gentle ripening. This fact alone goes a long way to explaining why Maipo produces most of Chile's best Cabernets.
