Château Le Chec 2007, Graves, Bordeaux £10.50 This lovely, sophisticated white is a blend of Sémillon, with some aromatic Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc added to the blend. It’s aged on its lees in oak barrels, so there’s a gorgeous seam of vanilla oak alongside aromas of lemon meringue pie, cream, grapefruit and ripe melons. This is balanced, clean, fresh and toasty with a crunchy apple finish. Perfect to take along to dinner parties. “Low yielding, 80-year-old Sémillon vines grown on the classic gravel soils are the secret to this bracing wine from Christian Auney. The greengage, smoky pear and citrus flavours have already developed a touch of honey, while a little Muscadelle has added a hint of honeysuckle. Good now, but will develop well. Drink 2008-2013; 89 points”. “Elegant, ripe, leafy, musky, faintly apricot and peppermint-charged fruit.” |
Juniper Crossing Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2007, Margaret River, Western Australia £9.50 The winemakers at Juniper Estate regularly pop down to their local beach in the Margaret River after work for a quick surf before sundown. Here in Southwold, we may not get the surf, but we do have the beach. This is a gorgeous, lemon-scented, fresh dry white that’s sealed under screwcap. Open 10-20 minutes before pouring to allow the waxy lemon skin and lime juice aromas to leap from the glass. This is a white perfect for enjoying outdoors. “Another of those attractive blends that have become synonymous with Margaret River. Magical citrus/tropical flavours provide the very essence of enjoyment.” “Highly aromatic, passionfruit, citrus, lychee and ripe apple aromas; a delicate but long palate; clean finish.” |
